The heart of a PrestaShop store is its catalog, which contains products and categories. Creating and optimizing your catalog is the main way you will make your website live in the eyes of the customer. After creating and optimizing catalog only your shop becomes a reality, creating content, and thus giving value to your online presence.
The “Catalog” section can be accessed by opening “Catalog” menu in the PrestaShop admin dashboard, which lists all the product-related pages.

You can manage products of your store using the “Products” page, in the “Catalog” menu. To create a new product, click on “New product”, on “Products” page under “Catalog” menu. It will open add new product page, where you can create new products or edit existing ones.
New in PrestaShop 1.7, the add new product page is organized in tabs like Basic settings, Quantities, Shipping, Pricing, SEO, Options.
The first field to fill is the product name, which will appear in the search engine results and product URL. Next to product name field, you will find a language selector field which enables you to select the language into which you want to edit or create the product.
You can choose type of product next to product name field and also select the language you would like to work next to the type of product selector.
PrestaShop 1.7 makes it very easy to create a product thanks to enhanced tabs. The “Basic Settings” tab provides all the main options to create a basic product. The images section of the “Basic settings” tab, allows you to upload all the images for the product, including all of its combinations (color, size, shape, etc.).
Adding Images to Product
You can either drag and drop your images directly from your local folder, or click on “select files” to search and open the folder containing your images.
The uploaded images will appear as thumbnails. The first one will be your cover image for the product, and will appear automatically on the product page of your shop. You can even change your cover image by clicking on the image’s thumbnail. You can check or uncheck “Cover image” to select the image as cover or not.
Adding Product Summary
At the bottom of images section, there are 2 description section, “Summary” and“Description”. The “Summary” field allows you to write a short description and it will appear in search results and in the description for your product. The “Description” field allows you to write a full description of your product, that will appear directly on the product page.
Adding Product Features
Below the product descriptions, “Add a feature” option is for specifying your product’s features i.e. weight, material, country of origin, etc. You must create a feature for general use in your shop, then only you can add a feature to a product. Go to the “Attributes & Features” page of the “Catalog” menu for creating features.
To add a feature to a product click on “Add a feature”, a drop-down menu will appears, listing all of your shop’s features. Then select which feature you want to add to a product. You can either select one of the pre-defined values or set a value manually in the “Customized value” field.
Adding Brand to Product
The same way you can add a brand, as you have added a feature . Click on “Add a brand” and choose a pre-defined brand from the drop-down list. If the brand is not available in the drop-down menu, go to the “Brands & Suppliers” page to create a new brand. A product can only be assigned one brand.
Adding Related product
The “Add a related product” field gives you the choice of choosing related products to associate with a product. Related products are suggested to your customers when they visit the product’s page. ^To add related products click on “Add a related product”, type in the first letters of product name and select it. The product is then added as a related products to the product.
Set Quantity for the Products
Quantity field indicate how many products are available for sale.This quantities will not be shown on front-end if you’re creating a product with combinations. More options for the quantities are available in the “Quantity tab”.
Set Price for the Products
Price field is used to set the price at which you want to sell the product.
- Price – Tax excluded. Set the price of your product in this field. This is basic price excluding any taxes.
- Price – Tax included. It calculates the price of product, base on Price – tax excluded and Tax rule, and display. If you will set this price of the product, It will calculate price tax excluded accordingly.
- Tax rule. It displays the tax applicable to the product. You can choose between different tax rule registered.
More options for prices are available in “Pricing” tab. You can manage tax rules in “International” menu, “Taxes” page.
Set Categories For Products
The “Categories” section enables you to select the categories for the product, in which it will appear on front-end. To assign a category to your product, you can either use the search bar, or expand the category list and select the one you want to assign.
In the list of associated categories you can see the path leading to the category, if you mouse over a specific category. It can be very helpful when you have many categories with the same name (like “Clothes” which can be both under “Men” and “Women” categories).
You can also add a new category, to do so save the current editing of your product then click “Create new category” button. Click on “Create a category”. Enter the name of the category and select its parent category. By clicking on create, the new category will be created and it will automatically assigned with the product.
Product quantities are managed in “Quantities” tab. PrestaShop will use these settings to calculate when a product is soon out-of-stock or unavailable anymore.
Quantity indicates how many products are for sale and is same as in “Basic settings”. Minimum quantity for sale. You can use this field to set the number of items to be sold in bulk. This means customers can only purchase this number of minimum quantity this product i.e at least 5 nos.
Stock alerts. You also can set a rule for low stock quantities of products. Fill a threshold value and check the box “Send me an email when the quantity is below or equals this level” to have an email sent to all the users who can run the stock page.
You can also set “Behavior when out of stock” and labels for stock availability of products. You can either Deny orders (the product is not available for sale anymore), Allow order (in essence, you are doing pre-sales) or Use default behavior (Deny orders).
Label when in-stock. display a custom message to your visitors when your product is in stock, for example “Item available”.
The “Shipping” tab enables you to give some important details about your product’s packaging and shipping. This stab is not available in the case of a virtual product.
Package dimension (width, height, depth & weight). You should fill each of these fields, because exact size and weight of a package is very useful and PrestaShop can also direct specific sizes/weights to specific carriers automatically, based on these settings.
Shipping fees You can specify additional shipping cost here, if you want.
Available carriers. You can select to have the current product only be shipped by selected carriers.
On the pricing tab you can refine your pricing strategy, either by using alternative prices (price per unit), or by creating some price rules specific to the product.
Retail price This is the price of your product before taxes. Price – tax excluded. Here you can set an arbitrary price, independent of calculations and regular prices. Price – tax included. It calculates the price of product, base on Price – tax excluded and Tax rule, and display. If you will set this price of the product, It will calculate price tax excluded accordingly.
Tax rule. It displays the tax applicable to the product. You can choose between different tax rule registered. Display the “On sale!” flag on the product page, and on product listings.. Check this box to show that your product is on sale, both on the product page and in the text on the product listing. An “On sale” icon will appear on the selected product.
Final retail price. This price, is the final retail price of your product, and it will update as you type.
Cost price This is the price you have paid for the product. The cost price must be lower than your retail price.
Specific prices Depending on the quantity of products your customer buys, the user group, the country, you can change the final price of the product . You can do this in “Specific prices” section of the “Pricing” tab.
Priority management PrestaShop uses a set of priorities in order to apply a single price rule to each customers. For example, you can change the user group to be more important than the currency. You can change PrestaShop default settings using the “Priority Management” section.
A checkbox at the bottom allows you to update the settings for all products. If the checkbox is unchecked, then your changes only apply to the current product only.
You can your product listing as well as increase your store’s visibility by filling out the various SEO fields: meta titles, meta descriptions, and keywords and friendly URLs.
Meta title. This is one of the most important field, as it will appear on all search engines. Make sure the title is as unique as your product within your site. Meta description. A description of the product in few lines (ideally, less than 155 characters). This may appear in search results for some search engines.
Friendly URL. This is another important field. It allows you to rewrite the web addresses of your products as you wish. Friendly URL are useful in search engine rankings also.
Redirection Page. You can decide what you want to show your visitor, when your product is offline. No redirection (404), display a “404 error – Not found” page. Permanent redirection (301), will permanently redirect the visitor to another product page. The current URL of your product page will be replaced by the URL of the product page of your choice. Temporary redirection (302. This will temporary redirect to another product page.
The “Options” tab allows additional settings to manage product references, suppliers, product customization, visibility and files etc.
Visibility You can choose where do you want your product to appear like Everywhere, Catalog only, Search only or Nowhere. Tags are terms and keywords that will help your customers easily find this product in search bar using specific keywords. You can separate different keywords by a comma.
Condition & References PrestaShop not only allows you to shop new products, but also used and refurbished products also. You can set these settings in Condition and References section. You can also display this condition on page. You can even define different reference code for this product in this section, for your internal purpose only.
Customization PrestaShop also permits you to allow your customers to customize the product that they will buy. Click on “Add a customization field” to select type of context (file and/or text) to be personalized. You can add as many fields as you want your customers to customize.
Attaching a file PrestaShop even permits you to upload some files, that your customers can see before their purchase. For example, you ca upload a PDF specification of your product.
